Intrinsically, Avaya was the enterprise group of Lucent Technologies, which had evolved from AT&T. So, the history goes back to the creation of the Bell Labs and the early days of telephony. In 2000, Avaya was spun off from Lucent. In 2001, Avaya introduced IP600 – its first IP PBX. After a slew of path-breaking products, Avaya acquired Tenovis in 2004 for $370 million and Spectel for $103 million. Avaya also invested in Tata Telecom as a majority interest. In 2007, private equity investors Silver Lake and TPG took the company into private ownership.
2009 saw a very important step for Avaya with the acquisition of the Nortel Enterprise Solutions business for $933 million. This acquisition significantly strengthened Avaya’s portfolio, customer base and partner ecosystem. Avaya has continued to grow both through its own innovation engine and through acquisition, and in 2012 video conferencing technology leader Radvision became the latest company to join the Avaya ranks.
Unique Quotient
Avaya is known for spearheading several path-breaking technologies in the collaboration space. Innovation is Avaya’s biggest strength and is constantly working towards meeting the collaboration and communication needs of its customers as they grow. Avaya’s award-winning technologies in the unified communication and contact centre space add to the brand equity.
Competitive Advantage
Avaya is increasingly moving from an age of information to an age of collaboration and is leading this trend. Trends like bring your own device (BYOD) and bring your own application (BYOA) are driving the technology and business landscape worldwide. These trends change how employees and companies behave and interact. Avaya is catalyzing a change that is helping businesses become time, geography and device agnostic – helping companies collaborate and communicate anytime, anyplace, anyhow. This translates into more flexibility, greater real-time communication and enhanced business efficiencies for our customers – helping to fuel their growth and that of Avaya.
Feats Fetched
Avaya is an innovation-led brand. Its vision is clear – it has to deliver intelligent, mission-critical collaboration and communication solutions to its customers. In the second half of 2012 alone, Avaya brought 57 new innovations to market. Avaya consistently invests at above the market norm in its research and development capabilities.
Its focus on R&D can be gauged from the fact that it has two Centres of Excellence in India alone – in Pune and Bangalore.
