“RailTel”, as a brand, invokes faster recognition in the market due to its lineage with the “Railways”.

Chairman & Managing Director,
RailTel Corporation of India Ltd.

In India, anything associated with Railways is viewed as prestigious. Same is the case with RailTel. Thanks to its lineage with the “Railways” carrying more than 25 million passengers daily, RailTel exudes prestige and confidence. Since its inception in 2000, this telecom entity has been more of a carrier-to-carrier service provider, providing various telecom and associated infrastructure services to all major telecom operators of the country. However, RailTel has always been in the forefront in adopting and rolling out the best-in-class network technology in the country – be it MPLS-based network in 2005-06 or NGN-based Voice switch in 2007-08. Based on these services, RailTel forayed into Enterprise segment for various IP-enabled services.
Unique Quotient
“RailTel”, as a brand, invokes faster recognition in the market due to its lineage with the “Railways”. This gives a unique advantage of prompt acceptance among the targeted customer base. At the same time, it also invokes greater enquiry among the target base as   a Railway-owned organization is operating in the telecom domain. Due to this, the brand generates adequate excitement among the targeted customers turning them to examine and accept RailTel services against any other branded services. The recall value of the brand has also shown to be much higher.
Competitive advantage
For RailTel, customers remain central to its vision and objectives in line with the business plan. Being in the highly competitive enterprise telecom segment, the organization has always differentiated its services based on faster deliveries, efficient network management and proactive fault monitoring and restoration. Being in the communication industry, it ensures that constant interaction with the customer is maintained at all hierarchical levels. This has resulted in highest customer satisfaction and growth of business over the years.
Like any other organizations, employees also form an important pillar for RailTel. However, being a Government PSU, it is difficult for RailTel to motivate and retain employees based on only financial packages. Hence, over the last few years, RailTel has taken proactive steps to introduce various employee-friendly policies. Supplementing them with adequate skill development and training opportunities in India and abroad has also resulted in least attrition rate in the industry.
Feats Fetched
RailTel has commissioned its Data Center at Secunderabad. Another data center is to be commissioned in the next four months at Gurgaon. In addition, it is also pitching for value- added services to its customers in the areas of Cloud, CDN, Telepresence, etc. RailTel has also started foraying into international markets for various ICT requirements of these countries and has initiated discussions with customers in SAARC and ASEAN countries. RailTel being a Government PSU has its vision and concentration on various important government projects, including NKN, NOFN and North-East project of USOF.
RailTel is also establishing the eighth TCOE (Telecom Centre of Excellence) of the country in partnership with IIT/Roorkee in order to provide emphasis on R&D and innovations in the field of “ICT and Broadband applications” which can be brought to the market in real time backed by industry players.
